SaferStudent was created by Jim Bennett, with guidance from a trusted network of advisors spanning higher education safety and security, student counseling services, behavioral threat assessment, disability support, and campus law enforcement. Together, we've seen what works, what doesn't, and what gets overlooked in traditional safety education. Why SaferStudent was created - Jim Bennett's Story

A career spanning more than 30 years in law enforcement, emergency management, and higher education public safety has given Jim Bennett a unique perspective on protecting people - including the heartbreaking knowledge of what happens when protection systems fail.

Serving as Executive Director of the renowned Bolante.NET violence prevention and threat assessment consulting network, Jim's daily interaction with organizations from Fortune 500 companies to small nonprofits has kept his passion alive as a trainer, keynote speaker, and consultant focused on violence prevention.

In 2010, Jim transitioned from municipal law enforcement to the complexities of higher education public safety, ultimately becoming Director of Public Safety at a community college. There he experienced both the profound satisfaction of keeping students safe and the devastating reality of campus tragedy.

"My career was forever changed by a tragic incident that revealed critical gaps in how we prepare students for campus dangers. The loss of a student - murdered by someone who was supposed to protect her - taught me that campus safety requires more than just security measures. It requires empowering students and families with knowledge, awareness, and practical strategies that institutions often struggle to provide."

This experience revealed what Jim describes as "a canyon-sized gap" between students' knowledge of real threats and their ability to prevent and respond to them. Through years of reflection and continued work in violence prevention, he recognized that families were being left uninformed about the practical realities of campus safety.

Jim founded Are We Good? as a podcast on workplace violence prevention, but his calling remained with higher education. The combination of his three decades in public safety, his experience with both the triumphs and tragedies of campus protection, and his understanding of family concerns led him to create SaferStudent.

SaferStudent represents Jim's mission to fill the information gap that exists between what colleges provide in orientation and what students and families actually need to know. Drawing from real experience with campus threats, emergency response, and the heartbreaking consequences of inadequate preparation, the course addresses the situations schools often cannot or will not discuss.

With trusted advisors in law enforcement, higher education, disability services, violence prevention, and behavioral threat assessment - and most importantly, input from parents, grandparents, and students - Jim has created comprehensive safety education designed specifically for families.
